Dry stone walls...

One of the other cool things that I saw up in the Peak District, and forgot to mention, were the dry stone walls. This area is mostly treeless, dotted with sheep-ranching farms. There are miles and miles of stone fences built without a spec of mortar.

Because of the lay of the land, they rarely come together in four square corners. The effect of the clean but arbitrary lines of limestone fencing marking out bright green pastures under blue skies is quite dramatic.
